SoFi Stadium, Part 1
First impressions are important and the first thing running through my mind when I approached this place was that it is actually even larger than it appears on TV.
Although it has a roof, it truly offers an open air concept. There are literally no walls in portions of the sections behind both end zones. Also surprising, the roof is fully transparent and sunshine flows directly through it onto the field below. The design of the roof is dramatic, amplifies crowd noise well, and reminded me of the shape of a horseshoe crab.
The wrap around big screen suspended from the ceiling actually exceeds the perimeter of the playing field. (Apologies to Jerry Jones, but Stan’s new mega TV is frankly better than yours. 🫢). Inexplicably multiple replays were broadcast to the fans at home, but not to the fans in the stands. C’mon Stan, surely that gigantic screen came with a remote. Use it more, buddy!
The sound system is fantastic, but the cannon they fired each time the home team scored a touchdown sounded more like startling gun fire to me. 😳
We found our way to the Corona Beach House near Section 225 and found the buffet to be really good, but expensive ($55).
While I had a fair amount of apprehension wearing a jersey from a visiting team here, the home fans were generally pretty reasonable and occasionally welcoming. Sure, there was some trash talking, but all of it was pretty good natured.
All told, this venue is worth the drive from San Diego to attend a game and root for ANY team other than the Chargers.
And that’s…Henry’s Take.
