In reflecting upon the recently concluded 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris, I found it interesting which new “sports” these Games chose to include. The global competition this year featured the Olympic debut of “Breaking” (a.k.a., “Break Dancing”), which led me to wonder which other new “sports” might appear at a Games in the future.

In an offer of support to the International Olympic Committee (@olympics), we assembled a Review Team to consider the inclusion of “Axe Throwing” as a future Olympic event.

The equipment we utilized ranged from hatchets to full length axes (with sharpened shovel heads thrown in for good measure) and presented various challenges that only increased the interest level during our competition.

There were a variety of games to choose from including traditional target practice, Zombie eradication, Tic Tac Toe, Candy Crush, and Wheel of Fortune.

Getting an axe to stick in the wooden targets proved to be more difficult than you might think and having one ricochet all the way back to where you’re standing is not that uncommon. 😳

The staff was really helpful in providing us with some coaching tips (and also helped us complete our experience injury-free 🤕).

I was disappointed that my Braveheart impression completely failed to intimidate my opponent, and was surprised to learn that the wooden targets need to be replaced every 2-3 days, that there is a collection of broken axe handles on display at the Bone Yard, and that all kids 12 and under throw for free on Monday and Wednesday nights.

If you’re feeling a little “dull”, a visit to SoCal Axe is such a unique experience that it might just cast you to an entirely sharper mindset.

And that’s…Henry’s Take.
