“The line it is drawn, the curse it is cast. The slow one now, will later be fast. As the present now, will later be past. The order is rapidly fadin’, and the first one now, will later be last. For the times they are a-changin.”
Bob Dylan

For far too long mental and emotional health has been overlooked and undervalued. There were barriers erected to discourage people from seeking the help that they needed and an unjust stigma assigned to those brave enough to step forward in search of assistance.

Thankfully that dated and dangerous manner of thinking appears to be on the way out. A growing number of people now realize that advocating for mental and emotional health, for yourself and others, is actually a sign of strength, not weakness.

While some silently applaud the efforts to shine a light on this cultural need, others step to the forefront and champion this effort. Among those champions is “RecUniversal.”

Their non-profit organization was founded for the purposes of sponsoring events that “create healing spaces through various types of recreation, for individuals suffering or have suffered from trauma, mental health complications, and suicide.”

Their most recent event “Pushin’ the Positivity: A Skate Jam Bringing Mental Health to the Frontside” took place at AleSmith Brewing Company and was high energy throughout and well attended.

The event was welcoming to skaters and non-skaters alike and featured numerous activities focused on providing a safe recreational outlet for youths of varying ages. @recuniversal organized multiple open skate sessions, a Sk8Mafia Pro Demo, a keg Ollie contest, and multiple (and generous) raffle and product giveaways.

More information on the important work being endeavored by this organization can be found at www.recuniversal.org.

And that’s…Henry’s Take.
