So be honest. How long did you stare at the cover picture before bothering to read this review? We both know that I’ll never be able to do that sandwich justice no matter how many words I use! 🤯
When it comes to NYC institutions, “Katz’s Delicatessen” cannot be ignored. Originally opening its doors in 1888 (that is not a typo), a visit here feels almost like a New York cultural experience.
They are always busy, so just be prepared for that. There are no off-peak periods here. Patience and deep breaths people! 😌
Immediately upon entering you may be reminded of Grand Central Terminal. Lots of people guided by organized chaos. Don’t get me wrong, they have a system here. I may not understand their system (like…at all), but it somehow works amazingly well. Whatever you do, DON’T lose that ticket they give you as soon as you enter. I’m not sure what happens if you do, but they are quick to inform you that there will be consequences! 🤷♂️
Most customers wait in line to place their orders at the counter (which is fine if you’re feeling lucky) because after you receive your food you may be panic stricken searching in vain for an open table. 🎲
An alternative is to head straight for the back, right hand side of the deli. There you’ll find a small, secluded section that provides table service.
No matter your seating preference, the portions are ginormous, so consider that when ordering. I’m not exaggerating when I say that I spent several minutes analyzing my sandwich from every angle, visually probing it for sections of vulnerability. I finally gave up and wielded a fork and a knife (fact). 🍴
While some establishments boast of a “secret sauce”, Katz’s has so much confidence in theirs that they don’t bother to even name it (or hype it whatsoever) on their bottles. It was an unbelievable addition, so you gotta at least try it! 🤤
And that’s…Henry’s Take.
